SDNB Meeting Notes.
This is the Sonoran Desert Native Bees archive for meeting notes. Everything that is discussed in the meeting are noted and posted below.
The second meeting of the Sonoran Native Bee working group was convened at Tom McDonalds Smiling Dog Ranch. Attending were Tom, Anne Ellis, Sarah Starkenbaum and Connie Thomas.
Our discussion centered around literature pertinent to the subject of solitary bees in general. Several publications were named and can be found on our website. Sara had contacted Bill McGuire who is on the board of Native Seeds in Tucson. He is interested in our project and Sarah will contact him again to arrange a meeting and determine if our project works in with their work on desert meadows. She has also contacted a think tank at NAU (Northern AZ University). They are seeking information on the relationship, if any, between bee populations and climate change.
Tom reported that a family health issue had taken him out of AZ for several days which impacted his ability to
perform his assignments.
Anne had volunteered to contact ASU to locate an entomologist (grad student, most likely) to help us in the identification of the bees we find. Her success story is named Maddie Ostwald. Maddie’s area of interest is animal behavior, pertaining especially to sociality in carpenter bees. Maddie will assist us on an ongoing basis.
Anne is very excited about community involvement…she constructed a bee box for us to see…not to specs, but a fun project (and ultimately useful when we get it right). Anne also reached out to several experts and scholars who have much information on which we can draw.
Connie brought the idea of placing bee boxes at Agritopia’s (Gilbert, AZ) community garden. Sarah took on the job of contacting the garden manager to determine interest of at the gardeners and obtain permission to install boxes.
We concluded our meeting at 9:30 and scheduled the next meeting for July 19, 8AM, Smiling Dog ranch.
